Being a philanthropist is a rewarding way to give back to those around you. As a philanthropist, you can use the resources you have at your disposal to help those in need in a multitude of ways. Sometimes though, it can feel as if your support isn’t going as far as you feel it can. Here are some tips to make sure you’re being an effective philanthropist.

Create a Plan

If you want to be as effective as possible in your philanthropy endeavors, the best course of action would be to create a plan and stick with it. It’s usually best if you identify the kinds of issues you feel most passionate about, and then focus your efforts on that. For example, you may feel passionate about your local community, so that’s where you decide to focus all of your energy into. If you can pick a few primary causes to focus on, you’ll be able to develop an expertise that will allow you to have a greater impact on the things you support.

It’s More Than the Money

Being an effective philanthropist isn’t always about how much money you are able to give to an organization. In order to really leave your mark on the groups you choose to support, you must donate your time, talent, connections and expertise in order to advance the groups mission. They call this “active philanthropy”. So many charities are desperate for volunteers and other things beyond money, so there are many ways to make sure you are as effective as you can possibly be. Another way to use your resources is to search for the root of the problem. There are many ways to go about this, but by doing it can help change the underlying problem rather than trying to fix the outcome.

Love what you do

What I believe is one of the most important ingredients to becoming an effective philanthropist is loving what you do. By doing what you do as a philanthropist, you are providing a positive force in the world around you. The work we do is a blessing, and as you continue you donate your time and efforts to the causes you believe in, you will have a greater sense of satisfaction with who you are as a person. By helping others, you’re helping yourself.

There will never be one definitive way to becoming the most effective philanthropist you can be. Everyone is different, and we all have different mountains we must overcome to get to where we’re going. As long as you find something you love, stick with it, and put all of your heart into it, you’ll do so much more than you ever imagined.
